Lela Rose, Fall 2013 – Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week

What I love about the Lela Rose Fashion Week’s Fall 2013 Collection featured at Fashion Week is the range of textures and colors used and they way they work together, both as a collection and in the individual pieces themselves. The textural use of lace and layered sheer fabric is like Hansel from Zoolander: it’s so hot right now. Which is why it’s nice to see a collection of stand-out pieces that use texture, lace and sheer fabric in a different way than everyone else. In the same way that other designers mix prints, Lela Rose mixes textures that make me want to reach through my computer screen and delicately fondle the fabric in and out of my fingertips. I’m not above a good fabric fondling. Don’t report me to To Catch A Predator just yet; you know you’ve fondled a fabric or two in your day, and if it’s as touchable as these designs look on screen then it would be worth the weird looks.

I also love the splashes of color Lela Rose incorporates into the line and the way the garments and patterns flow freely between structured and rigid to natural and relaxed. It seems there are no unifying rules that bring this collection together, which is why it all works so well for me. It’s rich in texture and in color and I’m in love.

PS: Lela Rose isn’t just a ready-to-wear collection; the team also designs wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, footwear, accessories and home decor. Lela Rose is the sextuple threat.

Clover Canyon: Designer To Watch

I love the use of colorful prints in fall fashion, and Clover Canyon’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2013 runway looks are as inspiring as they are vibrant. The colors and the shapes within the prints are both symmetrical and dynamic at the same time, giving the feeling of a perfectly polished and put together woman who is at the same time fun, unexpected and exciting. For me, it’s this juxtaposition of colors and personality that make Clover Canyon’s designs so successful. That, and the their thoughtful approach of designing or engineering the prints to shape and flatter the body.

According to their website, Clover Canyon designs each collection to “reflect the electric, joyful spirit of California through vivid prints and streamlined silhouettes.” Being from California myself, I would have to say “mission accomplished” and then start into a slow clap.

I also love that the design team draws on their “shared passion for travel and art.” This inspiration is evident in every design and it makes me want to spin a globe blissfully and book a trip to wherever my finger lands. I hope that one day my designs will evoke similar feelings of wanderlust and excitement that Clover Canyon’s designs have summoned out of me.

Textiles & Textures Take Manhattan At Fashion Week 2013

I love Fashion Week. I’m always excited to see what the top designers around the world are envisioning for the year ahead. Like the talented Oda Mae Brown (from the movie Ghost), they are predicting the designs and colors that will ultimately become reality for next year. The looks they create today will influence, to some extent, the mood and vibe for fall. Will it be dark and cozy like a black feathered coat? Or flirty and hopeful like a pop of yellow in a layered dress? What does Fall 2013 look like?

For me, it’s looking like the vibrant colors and textures from the spring and summer lines of 2012 are making their moves on Fall. I’m always happy to see fall looks that incorporate texture, color and prints, and this year the designers at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week 2013 have given me hope that Fall 2013 will have pops of vibrant color among the wintry greys, blacks and browns that normally make me want to eat a lot of roasted chicken and hibernate through winter. Below are some of my favorite textiles, prints and textures at fashion week that are fresh and inspiring. I’m liking what I’m seeing, Fall 2013. MASTERING THE ART OF FABRIC PAINTING & DESIGN

This book is hands down my favorite Textile guidebook. It’s beautifully designed and is packed full of tips, techniques and interviews with designers. It covers digital and hand printing techniques, explains the different types of fabrics, inks and dyes you can use, how to design stellar repeats and how to get your designs produced. It’s also inspirational as it provides interviews from various designers with a range of textile design experience. This book is perfect for the person who is just starting to learn more about textile design and the person that’s been designing. It really covers such a range of techniques that anyone can learn something new about fabric printing and design with this book.
